2.3 Class Materials Questions

We were also assigned to complete some exercises of snapshot for better understanding and comprehensive of cinematography angles.

Depth of field
Foreground, midground, and background are terms used in composition to describe different spatial zones within an image.

  • Foreground: the part of the image that appears closest to the viewer. It often serves to frame the subject or add depth to the composition.
  • Midground: lies between the foreground and background. It typically contains elements that support the main subject and contribute to the overall context of the scene.
  • Background: the part of the image that appears farthest from the viewer. It provides additional context, setting, or environment for the main subject.

Depth of field refers to the range of distance within a scene that appears acceptably sharp in an image. It is controlled by factors such as aperture size, focal length, and distance from the camera to the subject.

  • Deep Depth of Field: from foreground to background, is sharply in focus. This is typically achieved with a small aperture (larger f-stop number) and
  • Shallow Depth of Field: a small portion of the scene is in sharp focus while the rest gradually blurs into the background or foreground. This effect is often used in portrait photography or to isolate a subject from its surroundings
Screen Direction

The 180 degree rule: a guide for maintaining screen direction throughout a scene. The rule supposes that an imaginary line is drawn through the middle of a scene, and the camera only shoots from one side of this line, never crossing over to the other side. This line is also known as the axis of action.  This ensures that the subject on the right side of the frame cannot inexplicably jump to the left and vice versa.

Continuity in cinematography: maintaining consistency in visual elements, such as props, costumes, and character positions, from shot to shot within a scene or across multiple scenes.

Screen direction: direction that actors or objects appear to be moving on the screen from the point of view of the camera or audience. A rule of film editing and film grammar is that movement from one edited shot to another must maintain the consistency of screen direction in order to avoid audience confusion.
