Module Information
Submission Requirement:
- Recap Task 2 brief
- Write a 300- to 350-word visual analysis of the selected design (refer to Visual Analysis lecture notes and guide).
- Include reference links where applicable.
Lectures
Lectures 1 - 6 refer to
Task 1.
To fulfil this assignment, we need to conduct exploration,
documentation, and analysis of the previously chosen design piece from
Task 1. The focus will be on elaborating Visual Analysis which is
elaborating the design principles shown in the artwork, along with
considerations such as size, placement, purpose, and the effectiveness
of the design concerning the selected United Nations Sustainable
Development Goal (UNSDG).
Additionally , we need to find two similar styles of artwork from the
same author then analysis and
recognize its intricate elements and deliberate on the fusion of
design principles.

Title: Influenza - Nature Outlook
Artist: Antoine Doré
Year: 2019
Size: Not applicable
Medium: Behance and Pinterest
Phase 1: Observation
Antoine Doré's 2019 artwork, titled "Influenza", is portrayed in
portrait orientation. In the central depiction, is an influenza virus,
surrounded by frontline heroes such as doctors and healthcare
professionals riding on a wave of Antimicrobial Proteins, moving
towards the bacteria. At the hands of these health personnel, they are
riding medical equipment like injections and medications combating the
infectious agent. The visual elements consist of two distinct color
tones: a warm red and a cool green. In summary, this design conveys a
meaningful message by incorporating swirling lines and organic shapes
throughout its composition.

Phase 2: Analysis
This design demonstrates Gestalt theory by showing the complexity of
scenes of battling bacteria in a comprehensible layout and structure.
The focal point lies in the central image of influenza
(emphasis), depicted in shades of green encircled by a
defensive ring of antibiotic medications. The medical professionals
riding on medical equipment such as medicine and injections evoke a
sense of motion and purpose in relentlessly fighting against diseases
(movement). Low opacity lines and flowing strokes mimic their
efforts' fluid movements and dynamic nature.
Color plays a pivotal role, with a deliberate warm and cool
contrast between red and green. The green symbolizes the
malevolent force of bacteria, while the red represents the positive
aspects. The overall composition was arranged in terms of
scale and proportion. The hierarchy is established through the
size relationships – the bacteria caught the attention as the largest
entity, followed by small medical personnel. This thoughtful
arrangement not only enhances visual appeal but also communicates the
significance of each element in the broader narrative of combating
diseases.

Phase 3: Interpretation
This is a poster designed for article news cover page to
congratulate the US Center for Disease Control (USCDC) drawn by a
Paris-based illustrator Antoine Doré. I found inspirations from his artworks has narrative depth which go beyond aesthetics,
tell stories and conveys a profound meaning. For instance, these
artworks highlighting the collaborative efforts of biodmedicine
professions fighting against diseases threat. Besides, Antoine
also combinetraditional and digital techniques by skillfully
incorporating grdient and textures resulted his artworks left long
lasting impression with bold visuals. Through these impactful
composition, Doré successfully captures the intersection of nature
diseases and human intervention in the face of a viral challenge.

Further Reading
A Profound Exploration of Design: "The Design of Everyday Things" by
Don Norman
Even though I did not manage to finish reading the whole book the first
few chapters are quite interesting as it captivates the journey into the
world of design, unveiling the relationship between people and the
objects they interact with daily. This book has proven to be an
eye-opener, offering valuable insights and practical lessons for
designers and non-designers alike.
Lesson Learnt ( Reading Review):
- User-Centered Design Matters: The lesson from Norman's book is the significance of user-centered design. Placing the user at the core of the design process ensures that products are not only functional but also enjoyable to interact with.
- Affordances Shape Perception: Understanding the concept of affordances is crucial. Recognizing how objects communicate their use to users helps in creating more intuitive and effective designs
- Learn from Mistakes: Analyzing poorly designed objects and acknowledging their flaws is an integral part of the learning process. Identifying design pitfalls enables designers to avoid common mistakes and create more user-friendly solutions.
- Balancing Aesthetics and Functionality: A harmonious balance between aesthetics and functionality is key to successful design. Beautiful designs that fail to fulfill their intended purpose are ultimately ineffective.
Feedback
Week 4
I went to Osaka Trip with The Design School and thereby got no feedback
as did not attend Mr. Zeon's lesson.
Week 5
Mr. Zeon commented that my interpretation could be more towards the
artist illustration's style also how the visual elements and principles
stand out in sense of conceptual approach and notable feature. Thus, I
have input my analysis of similarities of his awrtwork.
Reflection
Experience
Throughout my design principles class, I embarked on a journey of
discovery, learning how to interpret design elements within
artworks. One of the key takeaways from this experience is enhance
my ability to identify design principles and subsequently analyze
their visual elements impact on the overall composition. This
process has enabled me to delve deeper into the visual language of
art, understanding how each element contributes to the narrative of
a piece.
Observation
One of the significant observation was recognizing design principles
from the various artwork, also exploring how different individuals
express these principles in their unique ways. This observational
skill has broadened my understanding of design, allowing me to
appreciate the diverse perspectives and interpretations that artists
bring to the table.
Findings
My main findings is the illustrator of Antoine Doré who residing in
Paris always expressing himself through art more natural than
describing his work in the third person. His artistic technique
seamlessly blends traditional and digital mediums, featuring a
foundation of classic line drawings. I have learnt that famous
artists always have a keen emphasis on composition and color , the
art-piece tell stories instead of aestheticsness.
